Definition
Multifunctional Flood Defences (MFD) is a newly developed concept to optimize allocation of urban space rather than constructing stand-alone structures. MFDs are flood defences that combine the function of flood protection with other functions such as housing, recreation and leisure, commercial buildings, ecology, mobility and transport, underground infrastructure and they are functional parts of the urban or rural environment(Oderker M., 2013).
Co-benefits and impacts
Instead of modifying the surrounding area for a traditional flood defence, the multifunctional flood defences are modified for the surrounding area. Functions in the surrounding area do not disappear, but they remain or are enhanced. Because of this substantial difference, a MFD can be a spatial solution that allows many functions to be combined using the same area of land as a traditional flood defence, but without jeopardizing the strength of the MFD and the safety of the hinterland (Oderker M., 2013).Definition (GR)
Τα Αντιπλημμυρικά Έργα Πολλαπλών Χρήσεων (ΑΕΠΧ), είναι μια ιδέα που αναπτύχθηκε πρόσφατα, περισσότερο για την βελτιστοποίηση της κατανομής του αστικού χώρου παρά για την κατασκευή αυτόνομων υποδομών. Τα ΑΕΠΧ είναι αντιπλημμυρικά έργα που συνδυάζουν τις λειτουργίες αντιπλημμυρικής προστασίας με άλλες λειτουργίες όπως στέγασης, αναψυχής και ελεύθερου χρόνου: εμπορικά κτίρια, οικολογία, κινητικότητα και μεταφορές, υπόγειες υποδομές αποτελούν λειτουργικά τμήματα του αστικού ή αγροτικού περιβάλλοντος.(Oderker M., 2013).

Αντί να επέμβουν στις γύρω περιοχές για ένα παραδοσιακό αντιπλημμυρικό έργο, τα Αντιπλημμυρικά Έργα Πολλαπλών Χρήσεων (ΑΕΠΧ) τροποποιούνται τα ίδια για τις ανάγκες των γύρω περιοχών. Οι λειτουργίες στη γύρω περιοχή δεν ακυρώνονται, αλλά παραμένουν ή και εμπλουτίζονται. Λόγω αυτής της ουσιαστικής διαφοράς, ένα ΑΕΠΧ μπορεί να είναι μια χωροταξική λύση που επιτρέπει το συνδυασμό πολλών λειτουργιών. Χρησιμοποιεί την ίδια περιοχή με ένα παραδοσιακό αντιπλημμυρικό έργο, χωρίς να διακυβεύεται η ισχύς του ΑΕΠΧ και η ασφάλεια της ενδοχώρας. (Oderker M., 2013).Problem types
