Case study: Flood forecasting and Early warning, Les Boucholeurs

Description of the application

Establishment of a coastal monitoring system during major weather events as well as during periods of spring tides. The system will focus on strategic areas for securing people and property facing the sea. The objective is to enable: - Monitoring of coastal areas exposed to marine erosion phenomena (swell) and storm surge, and having a strategic security of populations and property matters facing the sea. - The emergency intervention in cases representing an immediate danger to the safety of people and property. This monitoring cell is already in place on the two towns through internal agenda for mayor of Châtelaillon-Plage and through SMS to the municipal staff about the town of Yves since 2010. These alerts give maritime and meteorological information. Eventually, it is planned to carry out an operational form with all instructions for each agent. The town of Yves provides for the establishment of a website with streaming information on wind, atmospheric pressure and tidal coefficients. This will be complemented by a program to improve temporary monitoring and forecasting systems variations in sea level and produce warnings about flooding dangers, enabling governments and especially the prefecture to activate chain warning of crisis and take preventive measures. The realization of this program is done from October 3, 2011 with the development by Météo-France and the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Marine (SHOM). Specific weather vigilance maps regarding the phenomenon "waves-submergence" for each department of the coastline, are also provided.
